The official rolls state that he deserted on 10/25/1777.

In his pension application, he asserts that he was maliciously accused of disobedience and sentenced to the lash, to escape which he left the service and furnished a substitute, James McMullen, who was received by Maj. Patrick Lockard [Samuel Lockhart].
