Promoted from Captain in 1779. 1779, elected Major and Lt. Colonel. Resigned upon learning of the Fall of Charleston. Richard Winn convinced him to return. Severely wounded at Williamson's Plantation (7/12). Took over the regiment after the battle of Cowpens.
